Why You Need to Write a Letter to Debt

When you look at your debts, what do you see?”

YOUR DEBTS ARE NOT A REFLECTION OF YOU

When it comes to debt we hold so many negative emotions; shame, anger, embarrassment and even guilt. But why? Why do so many emotions come up for us? It’s because we’ve allowed debt to determine our identity but that is not the truth. Society, our parents and internal judgments we place on ourselves cause us to see our debt as a reflection of who we are, and in the reflection in the mirror looking back at us we see the embarrassment and we hold that guilt.

We look at ourselves, in that mirrored reflection as financially incompetent. Debt never determines your identity but when you allow it to, you give your power away to your debt.

NEGATIVE FEELINGS AROUND DEBT ARE YOUR MONEY BLOCK

Your debt is a number and how many digits are in that number is irrelevant to how you should feel about it. We allow a number to impact our emotions which leads to impacting our vibrations which is completely the opposite of being in or living in abundance. We have gotten used to allowing our numbers (bank accounts, debts etc.) to determine our own self worth.

But debt is not part of you nor is it part of your identity. Take a moment to do this simple exercise:

  • Write down your debts on a piece of paper, and then place that piece of paper on a surface in front of you.

  • Visualize that piece of paper, and what’s on it as being completely separate from you.

Part of this exercise is learning to understand that the piece of paper is not controlling you. In fact it’s the opposite; YOU have the power to control that piece of paper! You also have the power to change what’s on that piece of paper and even the composition of it.

Did you know the more you stay trapped in negative thoughts around debt, the more of it you will attract?! Instead, you need to heal your relationship with debt in order to move forward and attract the abundance that will help you pay it off.

DON’T ALLOW DEBTS TO HOLD YOU BACK FROM LIFE

Imagine living a life where you’re always waiting to do something and the one thing holding you back is your shame around debt. I have so many clients who share this same sentiment that they have allowed their debt to hold them back from life; from enjoying life, from being in a relationship, from going back to school. You have to release the hold that debt has on you.

Your debt doesn’t define you or what you are worthy of. You are allowed to do all of the things while you are paying down your debts. Life doesn’t stop because you accumulated a certain amount of debt. If you consistently pay down your debt more than the debt you accumulate each month, you WILL become debt free.

Debt has served a purpose in your life and whatever that purpose is, you need to thank it and then release it. Only then can you move to a place of power, and finally have the power (and money) to pay it off.

EXPRESS GRATITUDE TOWARDS YOUR DEBT

You can’t express gratitude for being where you are in life and then in the same breath show frustration or a lack of gratitude for how you got there. You need to have the right emotions towards your debt. Money blocks towards good uses of debt (mortgage, student loan, investments) can actually stop you from building the wealth you are trying to achieve.

One of the most powerful ways to express gratitude towards your debt is to write a Thank You letter to it. Express to debt your thanks for all the ways it has helped or supported you through life.

If you’re stuck, here are some examples:

  • Paying bills

  • Running your business

  • Taking a trip to recharge and maintain your sanity

  • Investments in self-development/coaching programs

  • Any other way you have benefited in life from debt
