How Women can Relate to Money and Feel Empowered

Written by Aqleema Anwar

“The way you look at money (or avoid it) or your not-so-pretty money habits aren’t just things you do.”

Women and money. A tale as old as time and unfortunately one in which the woman has every odd stacked against her by society’s expectations. As women we’re constantly reminded that we are bad with money, need someone to help us with our finances, can’t talk about money and definitely shouldn’t be planning to live a life filled with wealth. All of these are embedded into our lives, from childhood to adulthood they are the stories that were told (or silently shown) to us and they are the ones we memorized along the way.

Every one of us has a money story; sometimes they share similarities and sometimes they’re completely different. But one commonality is that we all carry them around, reaching into our invisible bag and offering up a predetermined money block as proof of payment that we’re not worthy of something we desire.

Your money story is the outward reflection of the inward narrative that you have inherited or created. This is why you look at money (or don’t look at it) a certain way. This is why you save all of your money because you were told you can’t be trusted with spending it or making more of it.

But just because you weren’t in control of what you were being taught as a child doesn’t mean you can’t control what you believe and carry forward into the future. With the right mindset, beliefs can be changed. You have the ability to change a negative thought or block into one that serves you right now and one you can build upon as you develop your future financial identity.

Here are some journal prompts that will help:

  • How would you describe your current relationship with money?

  • What did you see, hear or experience as a child around money that is impacting your current relationship with money?

  • What would it look like to have a loving relationship with money always?

  • Connecting to the financial life you wish to create, reflect on the following questions and then implement your responses into your financial life:

    • What do you wish to believe about money?

    • How do you want to manage your money?

    • How do you want to make financial decisions?
