Financial Lessons Learned From a Baby: Insights for Money Management

Written by Marcais Bowen

“babies don’t know it’s supposed to be hard; they just know they have to do it. And so, they do.

It's a beautiful day, and I find myself reflecting on a truly inspiring scene at home that truthfully brought a tear to my eye. I'm sitting on the floor, watching my 6-month-old daughter as she explores everything around her—her own anatomy, her toys, the world. As she struggles to grip objects with her tiny hands and fingers, her determination not to give up is plainly visible. Even when she fails to grasp them at first, she persists until she succeeds. This moment of innocent exploration and tenacity got me thinking about the incredible lessons we can learn from babies.

Babies approach life with an unstoppable spirit. They never consider giving up, whether it’s learning to grasp a toy or eventually taking their first steps. They don’t know it’s supposed to be hard; they just know they have to do it. And so, they do. Every challenge, every new day, brings them a little closer to their next big milestone.

This brings me to a powerful reflection on our adult lives, particularly in the context of financial independence and growth. Why is it that as adults, we often try something once and if we fail, we think it’s not possible? Why do we easily forget the persistence we once had as babies learning to use our hands or taking our first steps?

Let’s take saving money as an example.

Who says you can’t save money? Who says you can’t get out of debt, or provide for your family in the way you’ve always wanted? Too often, we let past failures or the discouraging words of others set our limits. But here's the truth — what you want in life is possible. Just like a baby who doesn’t give in to the idea that they can’t walk, talk, or use their hands, you too can overcome your financial hurdles. Like a baby learning to crawl, the key is to keep pushing forward, no matter how many times we stumble.

It's time to rethink what you believe is possible. Let's shed the misconceptions that hold us back from achieving our financial goals. Saving for that vacation, buying a home, preparing for retirement—it’s all within your reach. You might have tried in the past and found that things didn’t go as planned. That’s okay. What matters is that you’re here now, ready to try again, with more experience and determination than ever before.

So, I invite you to shift your mindset. Like a baby unyielded by the idea of failure, know that you can manage your finances successfully. You can afford the life you desire. Whether it's saving on insurance premiums, funding those dream trips, or simply feeling more secure about your financial future, it’s all possible.

If you're ready to see what’s possible for you and to take action towards achieving your financial goals, I'm here to help. Book a call with me, and let’s explore how you can not only meet but exceed your financial expectations. Let’s learn from the determination of our littlest ones and remind ourselves that persistence in our actions can lead to achieving great things.

Together, let's bring the fearless spirit of our infant selves into our adult challenges and transform our financial futures!
