Worthy Women Series: Carly Burdick

“... If I’m not working really hard or securing my job or finances, I’m not of value.”

That’s the money story Carly Burdick used to tell herself when she started the journey of figuring out her financial identity.  A money story that didn’t come from her own experiences but instead, was carried forward from what she remembers growing up.

Her parents worked a lot and although discussions around bills caused tension, she was never made to feel like there wasn’t enough money.

Her dad got promoted and they moved to Florida but the new job required a lot of his time so when they did spend time as a family, it was almost a celebration of dinners, going shopping or going on trips.

Unknowingly she was watching a “sacrifice equals security” lifestyle play out. Until one day, her dad lost his job and everything changed.

All of a sudden, not only was the family suddenly facing financial problems, but even those started to be upstaged by emotional ones. There were issues and no one was talking about them.

Trying to discuss what was happening was too triggering for everyone.

“My dad put a lot of his value and his worth into his career and so for me to see all of a sudden that taken away, it made me think that if I’m not working really hard or securing my job or finances, I’m not of value.”

And that’s how Carly’s money story became intertwined with her own value and worth, even in her relationship with her husband.

“I felt so lost. I felt completely burned out with my job and my husband was willing to support me and I was forced to question if I even felt worthy of feeling secure, (or) feeling that I’m being taken care of…”.

It was during this time that Carly saw reflections of her mother and father’s money stories within her own marriage. The way she had seen money in the past was not the way she wanted to envision it for her future. And that’s what pushed Carly to step into her future self and create a new money story.
