What is Your Relationship Status With Money?

If someone had asked me years ago what my relationship status with money was, I would probably have replied with “it’s very one-sided”. Because years ago, I viewed my money as something that came in, that I had to find ways to spend. And, let me tell you, early on, I spent it very well. But not in the ways I should have been. It never even occurred to me that there was an opportunity to build a relationship with money. But the more I started to explore this idea, the more I began to understand the importance of it.

What is your relationship status with money? Have you ever been asked that question? Or even asked it to yourself. Just like any human relationship, there are different statuses that correspond with how you treat your money, and here’s the important part, how it treats you back. Let’s explore them.

Which one describes your current relationship status with money:

Happily married

You and money are like connected soulmates. You check in on each other, you have regular ‘money dates’ where you review your spending and financial goals and actively plan for your financial future together. You feel supported and know because of your connection to money, you will always be taken care of and can call in and attract the money you desire.

Strangers sleeping in the same bed

You know money is there. You can see it and know its place in your life but you don’t have a connection to it. You acknowledge its existence but that’s where it ends. It’s hard for you to connect to its bigger purpose in your life other than the material things you use it to buy. The thrill of which, quite honestly, disappears real quick.

Having a secret love affair

You only check in on your money or look at your bank account when you know it’s safe to. You log into your online banking the day after payday because that’s when your account will look the sexiest. But, you also easily avoid it when the bills start being paid and the amount starts to get depleted. It’s a game, it’s the thrill. But deep down you know it won’t lead to a long lasting  financial future.

It’s Complicated

Are you always fighting with your money? You always feel like it has let you down without even giving it a chance. You constantly feel like you just never have enough or you’re always asking why money just doesn’t show up for you like it does for others. If you keep thinking that money or lack of it, has done nothing but disappoint you, that is exactly what money is going to continue to do, by keeping you in this complicated relationship.

Your current relationship status impacts how you manage your money and of course, your money mindset.
