4 Easy Steps to Help You Say Goodbye to Student Debt

Is it shameful that you further educated yourself in hopes to advance your life? Is it shameful that you dreamed of a certain career and then enrolled in the years of education to realize that dream? Is it shameful that you wanted to be the first in your family with a post-secondary degree? Is it shameful that you wanted to make a lot of money so your family never has to worry and went after the schooling that would create that for you? Is it shameful that you wanted to be an example for your children that they can be whoever they want to be without allowing money to stop them?

Seriously – what is so shameful in any of that?! Nothing.

Yet so many people hold shame, guilt, resentment or frustration towards their student debt. They see it as a financial burden instead of shifting their mindset to focus on the financial blessings this debt has created – the money, career, vacations, car and lifestyle (just to name a few).

So, when do you plan on having your student debts paid off? If the answer is anything close to “I don’t know, probably never, I’m in so much debt, I don’t make enough, I can barely cover my minimums as it is” – then let me say that doesn’t sound like the financially empowered woman that I know you are.

Those are the EXACT stories my clients used to tell themselves, before we started working together. And if that’s the story you are living out of, you can let that go now. I’ve supported so many clients in achieving their debt-free goals and there’s nothing that differentiates you from them. The only difference – they decided to take back financial control and implemented the 4 steps below.

4 Steps to begin paying down your student debt:

1. Believe it’s possible

What you expect is what you attract. So, if you’re expecting to always be in debt, that’s the life you will create for yourself. The thoughts you hold in your mind are the ones that create your results. Believe you will pay off your debts and then act in alignment with that belief. To hold this belief, focus on what you will do or how your life will be, once your student debts are paid off.

2. Release the guilt and shame

See your debts from a place of gratitude for what they have supported you with in life. If any of your debts have helped you get ahead in life (ie. schooling, starting a business, etc.) you can’t express gratitude for where you are, but then a lack of gratitude towards the way in which you got there. When you can see your debts from a place of gratitude you are more empowered to work towards paying them off (not to mention the shift in vibration you’ll have which will allow you to attract the money to do so).

3. Create a debt repayment plan

Wishing to be debt-free (or believing it will never happen) is the surest way to stay in debt. If you are serious about getting out of debt, create a plan to get there. Write down all of your debts, set a debt-free target date and then calculate what you need to do each month to get there. If this means increasing your monthly payments, then call to increase them. You don’t have to stick to the plan that your creditors have given you.  Remember - You are the one in control.

4. Put any unexpected income towards your debts

If you receive a tax refund, bonus at work or maybe even some cash for your birthday, instead of feeling like you just won the lottery and decide to go on a shopping spree, put this money towards your debts. This will help you to get out of debt much faster.

Now that you have a new mindset towards your student debts, take the necessary action steps to begin paying them off with more clarity and confidence. Becoming debt free IS always possible with the right plan and mindset.
