Overcoming Money Blocks

Getting rid of them can be a literal life-changing experience and one step closer to having a healthier financial mindset. Unfortunately there isn’t a “snap of the fingers” solution to reducing them. Although that sounds like the perfect solution, it’s also likely that they would just creep right back into your life. Instead, I have some tips on how you can overcome money blocks for good - or at least make it easier to get rid of them should they find a way back into your life.

Identify Your Money Blocks

How do you know what needs to go if you don’t know what you’re holding onto? This requires honest introspection. Start by asking yourself how you feel towards money and don’t just settle for a “I love it, of course!” response. It’s great if you love it but why do you love it, or why do you hate it if that’s the emotion that comes up. Write them down. What common theme do you see amongst your negative beliefs?

Understand Your Financial History

The foundation of almost every money story is built in childhood experiences. Try and think about your family’s behaviours and attitudes towards money. Was your dad different with money compared to your mom? How did each one of them manage their money? Was your household one that had open and honest conversations about finances or were there hushed tones and secrecy around that topic? Understanding these influences will help you better understand the themes you uncovered in step one.

Set Clear Financial Goals

Define what financial success looks like for you. Setting clear, achievable goals can help motivate you to move past your blocks and work towards something concrete.

Educate Yourself About Money

Lack of knowledge, whether intentional or unintentional, can be a significant money block. Taking the time to understand personal finance, investment, savings strategies, and the economy is such a powerful move and can make financial success feel more attainable.

Seek Professional Help

Money and mindset coaches, financial advisors, financial therapists… there is no shortage of support available to those who need it. And seeking out professional help is definitely not a sign of weakness. In fact, not seeking professional help might be a block in and of itself. Let me remind you that even mentors have mentors.

Celebrate Financial Wins

If you’ve ever been part of my coaching programs you are well aware of my Worthy Win Fridays. We celebrate every win, no matter how big or small and so should you. Celebration helps reinforce positive feelings.

Practice Gratitude

Be grateful for what you have on your way to what you want. Say thank you when paying your bills, give thanks to your debt. Gratitude in abundance is great but gratitude in scarcity is what helps break down money blocks related to fear and insecurity. Contrary to what you may think, you actually do have a lot to be grateful for.

Create a Positive Money Ritual

Pick a day, set the mood and have a money date. Just you and your money.

It’s a great way to build a connection with your finances and if you love your money, it’s going to love you right back. Establishing positive rituals around money can help reinforce a positive relationship with your finances.

Addressing money blocks is a deeply personal journey and not an easy one but by taking intentional steps you can move towards a healthier, more positive financial future.
